Dry Jack was a jazz/fusion band in the 70's and early 80's. We had two records
out on Inner City Records; the 12" vinyl kind with 2 sides. There were many
incarnations of Dry Jack over its 8 year life. All included pianist Chuck Lamb and his
brother Rich Lamb on bass. At one time their older brother John played guitar alongside
guitarist Rocco Marshall (Grand Funk/Humble Pie notoriety). Evan DuChene was the original
drummer. Lamb cousin Clint Swank held the guitar chair for awhile. So did 7 string
virtuoso Tony DePaolo. The band went through guitarists like Spinal Tap went through
drummers. The guy who held the guitar slot the longest was Kansas City jazz phenom Rod
Fleeman. |

Rod attended the University of Miami during its musical heyday. He knew all
about music and who the cats were. Through Rod we met the likes of Will Lee, Hiram
Bullock, the Dixie Dregs, Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny and on and on. It was the quartet
with Chuck and Rich Lamb, Rod Fleeman, and Jon Margolis that recorded the two albums Magical
Elements and Whale City. Both received alot of airplay on WRVR, New York
City's premier jazz station. Unfortunately one day the station turned country with no
prior notice, and the eighties were born. That was a real kick in the ass. |
25 years after the fact I got an email from Kevin
Yatarola who was a main guy at Inner City Records back in the old days. He included this
photo from our mixing sessions at NYC's RPM Studios in 1978. Kevin shot all the photos for
our LP Magical Elements and the promo pic at the top of this page. L to R producer Aimee
Chiariello, engineer Mike Barbiero, Rod Fleeman, Rich Lamb, Jon Margolis, and Chuck Lamb. |
